russia Builds Trenches Amid Growing Fears of Rapid Ukrainian Advance in Kursk Oblast – ISW

Ukrainian operations in Kursk Oblast are also reportedly affecting russian railway logistics

Analysts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) suggest that Ukrainian operations in Kursk Oblast are significantly disrupting russia's defense, logistics, and security.

Satellite images from Maxar, captured on August 12, reveal newly constructed defensive positions, including trenches and anti-vehicle ditches, southwest of Lgov along the E38 Lgov-Rylsk-Hlukhiv road, northwest of the russian city of Sudzha.

Further images published on August 13, taken between August 6 and 11, also show new fortifications near the 38K-024 road just south of Lgov.

According to the ISW, these new defenses are positioned approximately 17 kilometers north of the furthest reported Ukrainian advances in Kursk Oblast, signaling russian concerns about a potential rapid Ukrainian push further north.

The emphasis on fortifying major roads suggests that russian forces are prioritizing the protection of key ground lines of communication (GLOCs), particularly along the E38 and 38K routes, to hinder Ukrainian movements.

Ukrainian operations in Kursk Oblast are reportedly disrupting russian railway logistics as well. On 13 August, the belarusian Railway Workers Community reported that internal sources revealed russian Railways had instructed belarusian Railways to halt sending trains from Belarusian stations to the Oryol-Kursk branch of the moscow Railway starting on 12 August. This directive was due to a "large-scale operational transfer of troops toward Kursk Oblast" and the movement of freight trains for military purposes.
