Donald Trump's initiative, called the "Iron Dome", although in essence it is Reagan's "Star Wars" in the version of Elon Musk, is much broader than missile defense. Moreover, it is a project through which the US plans to win all wars of the 21st century.
This project involves the militarization of space and the placement of thousands of military satellites for various purposes in orbit. And this is a huge system that will be responsible for detecting and tracking targets, transmitting target designation, communicating with all components of the armed forces, as well as directly destroying some targets from space. At the first stage, this will apply to ballistic, hypersonic and "advanced" cruise missiles.

In addition, it is noted that this Trump's Space Iron Dome should hit missiles not only in flight, but also before their launch - that is, at their bases along with the launchers from which they are launched. And this directly indicates that this is not just missile defense, but a space strike system.

Moreover, if we are talking about destroying cruise missiles, why couldn't this also apply to aircraft, even those that use stealth technology. In particular, any aircraft built using stealth technology has a small effective scattering area in the frontal and side projections, but not from above. Therefore, with the help of satellite based radar it is possible to observe really everything.
At the same time, placing such means in space means erasing such a concept as range. Because the essence of the multitude of satellites in orbit is also that every minute over every piece of the Earth there are its own "eyes" and "fists". And if the 20th century showed that gaining air superiority allows you to win on the ground, then in the 21st century it is the mastery of space that will allow you to win the war both in the sky and on the ground.
So this can justify the huge costs that will be spent not only on the development and deployment of this system, but also on its maintenance. And it will cost really cosmic money.
If we return to Reagan's "Strategic Defense Initiative", its cost was the subject of very aggressive discussions at the time. The minimum estimate of the supporters of the "Strategic Defense Initiative" project started at $ 40 billion (in today's prices this would correspond to $ 110 billion).
Analysts at the Heritage Foundation in 1987 estimated that a more likely amount of $ 115-120 billion in spending over 10 years (about $ 315-340 billion in 2025 prices). But skeptics at the time claimed a trillion dollars, which would have helped implement Reagan's "Strategic Defense Initiative," which is now worth $2.74 trillion.
At the same time, the Pentagon, as is now known, requested $4.8, $5.2, and $4.5 billion to create the system in 1987-1989, an average of $4.8 billion per year. In today's dollars, adjusted for inflation, this is $13.14 billion.

But such a direct calculation, only adjusted for inflation, is misleading, because now the real cost of all defense projects has increased. On the other hand, when it comes to space, everything has become much cheaper.
But the main thing is that if these costs are at all significant for Washington, then the USA will go for it, because the stakes are really very high, and the technological advantage that the USA now has requires implementation. At the same time, it is possible to get another nice bonus. The fact is that in response to the American program "Strategic Defense Initiative" in the USSR, similar projects were launched. And the crazy costs for projects in which the USSR tried to "catch up and overtake America", as is believed, became one of the many reasons for the collapse of the Soviet Union...
