In the UK, officials confidently state that the upgraded Challenger 3 main battle tanks will be able to outperform any Russian armor deployed on the battlefield. The platform is even being compared to Russia’s much-publicized T-14 Armata.
According to a report by The Times, British sources claim that Challenger 3 will be the most protected vehicle in service, not only within the UK Armed Forces but potentially worldwide. It is also suggested that the tank will be resistant to drone attacks similar to those seen in Ukraine.

The cost of the upgrade program is estimated at £6 million (approximately $8.09 million) per unit, with seven tanks already produced. The relatively small fleet of 148 tanks is expected to be offset by integrating them with unmanned platforms.
The Challenger 3 is also described as a counterpart to russia’s so-called "unparalleled" T-14 Armata. At the same time, the article points to russia’s ongoing difficulties in launching serial production of the Armata.

From a Defense Express perspective, such comparisons should be approached with caution. While the russian program has indeed stalled for years and is unlikely to deliver large numbers of tanks to the troops, the Challenger 3 is also not a completely new design. It is based on upgraded Challenger 2 hulls, retains a traditional Western layout, and will be produced in limited quantities.
The key upgrade of the Challenger 3 is a new turret equipped with a 120 mm smoothbore L55A1 gun, replacing the previous rifled cannon. This allows the use of standard NATO ammunition, including programmable rounds.

As for protection, questions remain regarding its effectiveness against drones, as no specific countermeasures have been clearly demonstrated. It is possible that the tank may be equipped with active protection systems such as the Israeli Trophy, although such systems are not a guaranteed solution and can be overwhelmed by multiple threats.
Nevertheless, for the UK, the Challenger 3 will represent the most modern domestically operated tank, despite its limitations and relatively small numbers. This explains the strong promotion of the platform, including discussions about potential export opportunities, even though domestic hull production has been discontinued.
