Spanish defense authorities have been developing plans to replace half-a-century-old M109 howitzers for over a year now, and here comes the likely candidate

This Monday, May 12, the Feindef defense exhibition will open in Madrid, Spain, where GDELS (General Dynamics European Land Systems), through its Spanish subsidiary Santa Bárbara Sistemas, will unveil the Radhaubitze self-propelled artillery system to the general public for the first time, Infodefensa reports.

This self-propelled gun, announced roughly a year ago, is based on the Piranha Heavy Mission Carrier 10x10 wheeled armored chassis, also introduced in 2024. It integrates the Artillery Gun Module 155mm/L52 automated turret produced by KNDS.

According to the journalists, the Radhaubitze may draw interest from Spain’s Ministry of Defense, which is preparing to replace its aging M109 systems and has expressed interest in both wheeled and tracked self-propelled artillery.

For a reminder, in July 2024, Spain publicly outlined its requirements for a future artillery fleet: 36 wheeled and 109 tracked self-propelled guns, to replace the M109 after nearly 50 years in service.

Currently, the M109A5 remains the only self-propelled artillery system in the Spanish Army, with an estimated 100 units in service. In addition, the Army operates more than 250 towed artillery pieces, including L118, Model 56, SBT 155/52 SIAC howitzers, and various mortars.

Earlier, Defense Express covered why Spain wasn't allowed to the MGCS "Eurotank" project, with France and Germany both ignoring the formal request to join the venture, and outline the most recent significant contribution of military aid to Ukraine, including €200 million worth of artillery and mortar shells alongside other supplies.
