The Kremlin showcases its retrofitted armored train designed to protect logistics and rail infrastructure on the front line

russia has unveiled images of the Yenisei armored train, currently in use on the Pokrovsk axis in thee east of Ukraine. The photos, published by russian media on June 28, depict the heavily fortified train outfitted with anti-aircraft systems and a range of mounted weaponry. Notably, the BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicle has been placed on one of its flatbed cars.

The Yenisei train is believed to serve a multipurpose role near the front lines. According to In Factum, the train's primary mission is to secure critical railway operations in contested zones. It can support repair missions, provide security for logistical convoys, and even conduct reconnaissance. The presence of this armored train reflects russia's continued reliance on legacy military logistics in modern warfare.

The revealed configuration of the Yenisei train includes the ZU-23-2 anti-aircraft twin-barreled autocannon and turret mounts designed for heavy machine guns, specifically Soviet-made NSV Utyos gun. These weapon systems provide the train with a measure of anti-drone and anti-personnel capability, though their effectiveness against precision-guided weapons remains questionable.

The addition of the BMP-2 vehicle between rail cars highlights russia's effort to increase the offensive and defensive flexibility of the platform. This infantry fighting vehicle adds armor, firepower, and potentially dismounted troop support, making the train more than just a moving gun platform. However, its integration into a rail system also limits its maneuverability and exposes it to targeted strikes.

The photos were reportedly taken during combat coordination exercises conducted by the Yenisei train crew, who belong to the Center military grouping. The location is identified as the Krasnoarmiysk direction, referring to the Soviet-era name of present-day Pokrovsk, a frontline town in Donetsk region. The emphasis on combat readiness suggests that russia may be preparing to deploy the train in active operations.

While armored trains are largely considered anachronistic in modern warfare, they have seen a modest resurgence in russia's war on Ukraine. These platforms offer limited protection and can be useful in low-intensity or support operations, particularly along relatively secure rail corridors. However, they remain vulnerable to artillery, drones, and sabotage, threats that are abundant in Ukraine's dynamic battlefield environment.

The reappearance of the Yenisei train underscores a blend of old and new tactics as russia adapts to its logistical challenges under fire. As Ukraine continues to target rail infrastructure and russian supply routes, the use of armored trains may provide temporary relief but also expose new high-value targets to precision strikes.
