Ukraine's Kholodnyi Yar 93rd Separate Mechanized Brigade has unveiled a new battlefield role for its ground robotic systems, rescuing damaged equipment and high-value cargo drones from under fire. The innovation marks another step in the rapid evolution of robotic logistics and evacuation in frontline conditions.
According to the Brigade, the Alter Ego Unmanned Systems Battalion has expanded the use of its unmanned ground vehicles. Initially designed to evacuate wounded soldiers and deliver ammunition, these platforms are now being deployed to recover damaged hardware in zones too dangerous for personnel.

The robots are tasked with retrieving disabled ground assets and downed heavy-lift drones located close to the line of contact. This includes extracting damaged unmanned ground robots and recovering cargo UAVs that have been shot down, disabled, or forced to land due to malfunctions.
In the footage released by the Brigade, a UGV equipped with fork-style lifting arms and a specialized net is seen pulling a downed Vampire drone from an exposed battlefield position. The operation demonstrates both precision handling and the value of keeping soldiers away from high-risk areas.
The Brigade stresses that this approach significantly reduces losses of expensive equipment. Heavy cargo drones like the Vampire drone are critical for frontline logistics, transporting ammunition, medical supplies, and gear across contested terrain. Losing even a single drone can be costly both financially and operationally.
By using robots to retrieve drones under fire, the unit preserves crucial assets that might otherwise be abandoned or destroyed. Even if a drone cannot be restored to full function, its components, motors, batteries, electronics, structural parts, can be repurposed to repair other Vampire drones.
This recycling capability further enhances Ukraine's resilience in the drone war, where rapid replacement, adaptation, and repair have become central to maintaining an edge over russian forces. Saving parts means sustaining operations.
