Ukrainian counteroffensive reveals extent of russian military losses and tactics in Staromaiorske

On July 27, 2023, after the Armed Forces of Ukraine liberated the village of Staromaiorske (Donetsk region), images emerged indicating significant losses of various types of armored vehicles used by the occupying russian forces. These vehicles were part of the motorized infantry and airborne assault troops of the russian army.

This also demonstrates that in countering the Ukrainian counteroffensive, the russian forces rely not only on fortifications and extensive minefields but also on mobile armored groups consisting of various types of military units. The relevant images were made publicly available by the OSINT analyst Naalsio on his X page.

Based on the available images, a minimum of 4 tanks of types T-72 and T-80, at least three BMP-1 and BMP-2 vehicles, at least two BMD-2 and BMD-4 vehicles, as well as two damaged MT-LB and MT-LBV vehicles, were left on the battlefield in Staromaiorske.

It should be noted that the russian military might have evacuated some of their damaged equipment that could still be repaired or used as spare parts. Additionally, not all of the enemy’s equipment destroyed or damaged during the battles for the village of Staromaiorske may have been captured on social media footage. Consequently, the actual losses of russian armored vehicles during the fighting in this village could be significantly higher.
