​Greece Refuses Allies’ Request for the S-300 or Patriot Systems for Ukraine

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis asserts defense priorities amid international pressure

Allies requested Greece to provide Ukraine with the S-300 or Patriot air defense systems. However, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated that Athens will not comply as these systems are essential for Greece’s defense.

“Greece will not be sending either S-300 or Patriot systems to Ukraine. We were asked, and we clarified why it’s not possible,” Kyriakos Mitsotaki said.

He emphasized Greece’s support for Ukraine through various means, including defensive materials.

“But from the very beginning, we said that we cannot get rid of defense systems that are crucial for our deterrence capabilities. We have surplus material that we can support Ukraine with, we have done that, and I believe it’s the right choice. And if we can find such material, we will continue to do so. However, the air defense systems you mentioned are critically important for Greece’s airspace defense and will not be provided to Ukraine,” the Prime Minister added.
