Within European air defense strengthening initiative ordered Ukraine-proven Iris-T SLM systems, now reinforcing them with additional TRML-4D radars

German Hensoldt received order to supply additional radars to European countries within European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI). And we're talking about Ukraine-proven TRML-4D.

Recall, European Sky Shield Initiative, or ESSI German-led European initiative to expand ground-based air defense capabilities in region. It was first proposed in 2022, and as of 2025, 24 countries have already joined.

So, for short range (up to 10 km) Skyranger 30 and Tridon Mk2 air defense systems were chosen for project. Medium range from 10 to 70 km should be covered by Iris-T SLM and NASAMS. Long range at 70-150 km went to SAMP/T and Patriot.

Iris-T SLM, which proved its effectiveness in protecting Ukraine, received new contracts thanks to this initiative. Among recent participants, one can mention Denmark, which is assembling quite diverse fleet, and Sweden, whose configuration raises questions.

TRML-4D, which is part of this SAM system, also benefited from success, gaining great popularity and new operators. Therefore, its production is growing to 30 per year, and they continue ordering for Ukraine's needs.

TRML-4D belongs to class of active electronically scanned array radars, or AESA. Its detection range is up to 250 km, and it's possible to track up to 1,500 targets at once, which can be aircraft, drones, or cruise missiles.

Recall that Hensoldt also manufactures other ground-based radars, such as Spexer, which is installed on Skyranger, and Twinvis. And to satisfy new demand, company is increasing capacity, planning to manufacture 1,000 radars per year starting from 2027.
