Ukrainian Journalist Gets a Glimpse of IRIS-T Air Defense System

The system has already took down 51 russian air threats

Out of 51 missiles launched by the German IRIS-T anti-aircraft system, all 51 have reached their target, says Commander of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Mykola Oleshchuk in an interview by journalist Dmytro Komarov. This footage will be included in the upcoming series of interviews in a documentary movie project.

As noted by the journalist, he could only publish as much as was allowed by the Ukrainian military. On a side note by Defense Express, the advanced air defense system is a valuable target for a potential russian missile strike or a sabotage, which is why the Ukrainian military has been very cautious about spilling any information.

The first ever photo of the IRIS-T SLM system was published only last month, more than three months since it was delivered to Ukraine. There is no confirmed footage capturing its work or movement around the battlegrounds or rear of Ukraine.

The IRIS-T Surface Launched Medium-Range (SLM) missile system is a development by German Diehl Defence designed to counter various air threats, from fighter aircraft to cruise missiles, in a range of 40 km and altitude up to 20 km. It had been praised multiple times by Ukrainian military for its exceptional effectiveness.

It became the first advanced Western air defense missile system to come to Ukraine, soon followed by American NASAMS. Germany has so far pledged to deliver four such systems, as soon as they are manufactured. However, there is a possibility that Ukraine gets more from Sweden.
