Ukrainian UAV operators struck a satellite communications antenna tied to the Yamal-601 system, targeting a key node in russia's battlefield coordination network

Ukrainian drone operators continue to target critical elements of russian battlefield infrastructure, with a recent strike focusing on satellite communications used to coordinate frontline operations. The attack highlights the growing importance of disrupting connectivity in modern warfare.

According to footage released by the Raid 413th Regiment, operators identified and destroyed a satellite communications antenna configured to work with the Yamal-601 satellite. The strike was carried out using unmanned aerial systems and publicly documented on March 30.

The targeted antenna played a role in enabling russian forces to maintain real-time coordination between infantry units and drone operators. By disabling it, Ukrainian forces temporarily disrupted the enemy's ability to manage attacks effectively in that sector of the front.

The Regiment emphasized that such strikes are aimed not only at physical assets but at degrading the broader command-and-control network. In modern combat, satellite-linked communications are essential for synchronizing movements, directing fire, and maintaining situational awareness.

The Yamal-601 system, launched in 2019, is one of the most advanced satellites in russia's Yamal communications network. Operated within a system owned by Gazprom, the constellation has been presented by russia as an alternative to Western satellite services, including Starlink.

Notably, earlier generations of Yamal satellites relied on foreign electronic components, including Japanese and Italian technology, much of which has become inaccessible to russia due to international sanctions. This has complicated efforts to expand or replace parts of the network.

Coverage from the Yamal satellite system extends over parts of temporarily occupied Ukrainian territory, making ground-based terminals a valuable target. Destroying such antennas reduces the effectiveness of russian communications in specific operational areas, even if only temporarily.
