Ukrainian air defense forces successfully intercepted and destroyed russian Iskander-K cruise missile aimed at Sumy region, the West Air Command of the Ukrainian Air Force reported on October 12. The military released video footage showing the moment the missile was struck mid-air.
According to official information, the interception was carried out using the Buk-M1 surface-to-air missile system. The engagement took place during one of the recent large-scale missile and air strikes russia launched in the direction of Sumy.

The West Air Command emphasized that this successful interception once again demonstrated the professionalism, composure, and coordinated actions of Ukrainian air defense units.
"Our warriors have once again proven that professionalism, endurance, and teamwork are the strongest weapons," the statement read.
The Iskander-K, part of russia's Iskander missile family, is a cruise missile variant capable of striking targets up to 500 kilometers away. It can carry both conventional and nuclear warheads and is often launched from mobile ground-based platforms. Moscow frequently uses such missiles in its attacks on Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure.
This latest engagement highlights Ukraine's growing experience and adaptability in countering russia's mixed missile barrages. While Western-supplied systems like the Patriot and NASAMS often intercept high-priority targets, Soviet-era Buk systems remain vital in protecting front line and regional areas from aerial attacks.
As Defense Express previously reported, Ukrainian drone operators from the Rarog 427th Separate Unmanned Systems Regiment have successfully destroyed five russian tanks and one multiple launch rocket system in Donetsk region. The precise strikes disrupted russian mechanized assault and halted the enemy's advance, according to a report published by the Unmanned Systems branch.
