Poland Plans to Deploy Mines Along Borders with russia and belarus

Poland intends to place anti-personnel mines along its borders with russia and belarus as part of the East Shield project

As reported by European Pravda, Polish Deputy Defense Minister Paweł Bejda announced this during an interview with RMF24.

His statement comes as Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Poland announced their intention on 18 March to withdraw from the Ottawa Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.

"We have no other choice. The situation at the border is serious. I am referring to the Polish-belarusian and Polish-russian borders… This will be one of the key elements of the East Shield," Bejda stated.

According to him, Poland currently does not possess anti-personnel mines, but it has the capability to produce them.

"Factories of the Polish Armaments Group will manufacture the mines, but I do not want to go into details. The order involves several hundred thousand units, and we could even be talking about a million," Bejda said.

Commenting on the Baltic States' and Poland's plan to withdraw from the treaty banning anti-personnel mines, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna stated that "it is wrong to prohibit ourselves from using weapons that russia is ready to use against us."
