Norway commits to supply a "sufficient amount" of Soviet-type ammunition to cover Ukraine’s needs

Norway is planning to spend 210 million kroner (about USD 20 million) to buy artillery ammunition that is donated to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, says the statement of the Norwegian Ministry of Defense published October 12.

"The need for military support to Ukraine is substantial and critical. Effective artillery, including sufficient amounts of ammunition, has proven to be essential in Ukraine’s defense against the Russian invasion," said Minister of Defense of Norway Bjørn Arild Gram.

This money will cover the purchase of approximately 17 000 rounds in 122mm and 152mm caliber for Soviet artillery systems widely used by the Ukrainian army. The provision was coordinated with other Ukraine’s allies at the last Rammstein-format meeting of defense ministers from more than 40 countries.

As a reminder, earlier Defense Express reported that Norway was thinking out the possibility to empty their stocks below the "critical level" in order to help Ukraine get much-needed ammunition, with a plan to replenish the storage later.

The funds were taken from the totality of 400 million kroner (about USD 38 million) that Norway earlier entrusted to Great Britain who coordinates the procurement of military equipment and other essentials for the Ukrainian army.

So far Norway has provided Hellfire missiles, 22 M109 self-propelled artillery systems, 14 Iveco armored vehicles, Mistral air defense systems, 4,000 M72 anti-tank missile systems and more since March 2022.
