belarusian military raise new fortifications – and concerns

Soldiers of the belarusian army and civilian workers continue to build the so-called "Khrenin's lines" (named after the country's defense minister Khrenin) near the borders with neighboring countries. A new stronghold that may be an element for a new fortification complex was made near the Polish border, reports Belaruski Hajun, a project by Motolko.

According to the observations, the creation of fortified firing positions started: trenches, ditches and dugouts are prepared with the involvement of excavators and mobile cranes.

The journalists note that new defense line is also to be equipped with the "dragon's teeth" – pyramids of concrete up to 120 cm high intended to obstruct tank advancement. Also such materials as wooden boards, logs, concrete blocks, and tires.

A series of similar fortified areas along the borders of belarus constitute the "Khrenin's line". There are currently two possible explanations why a new element of that structure is being made. One is connected to potential territorial defense drills planned in that place. Although, there are no such drills there as of now and no information about any upcoming ones as well.

More likely, the belarusian media assumes, they are "preparing for defense against a potential foreign military threat." The indicator is that the fortifications are raised just 28 km from the border with Poland and 47 km from Ukrainian.

Moreover, lately, construction of new fortified areas is being pushed forward on an official level: the military demand from local authorities that such fortifications are built beforehand – so that if enemy sabotage groups or attack units start advancing, belarusian forces had prepared positions to quickly take hold of.

Earlier Defense Express reported that belarus was actively building fortifications near the border with Ukraine, 20-22 km from it, precisely, in the Homel region. It was suggested that all these works are only for display, as part of preparations for the annual "Military security and state defense" gathering held on May 26, but apparently no one was planning to dismantle the fortifications afterward, and now belarusian military forces are deployed there permanently.
