Newly built T-72B3M tanks with anti-drone protection have been spotted in Libya, highlighting continued russian arms exports despite battlefield losses in Ukraine

The Libyan Arab Armed Forces has reportedly received new russian-made armored vehicles, including some of the latest variants developed during the war. The deliveries highlight Moscow's continued efforts to maintain influence abroad even as its own forces face mounting equipment shortages on the battlefield in Ukraine.

According to reports from Libya Field Notes, the shipment includes upgraded T-72B3M main battle tanks fitted with anti-drone "cope cage" structures, some reinforced with chains for additional protection against FPV drones and loitering munitions. Newly delivered BMP-3M infantry fighting vehicles were also spotted with factory-installed additional protection kits designed to improve survivability against drone attacks.

Unlike improvised battlefield modifications often seen in Ukraine, including oversized metal "garages" and welded anti-drone cages installed by troops in the field, the systems supplied to Libya appear to have been installed directly at the factory. This indicates the vehicles were delivered as newly produced or newly refurbished export-standard platforms rather than older stocks retrofitted in combat zones.

The transfer is notable because russian forces themselves continue struggling with serious armored vehicle losses in Ukraine. Open-source footage from the front regularly shows russian units relying on civilian vehicles, motorcycles, and small infantry assault groups as drones make traditional armored assaults increasingly costly and ineffective.

This may explain why Moscow is willing to export modern armored vehicles despite battlefield shortages. Heavy armor deployed on the Ukrainian front often becomes an easy target for Ukrainian FPV drones and artillery, reducing its battlefield value. By contrast, exporting the equipment can generate revenue, strengthen political influence, or secure strategic partnerships abroad.

The deliveries may also be linked to russia's broader military ambitions in North Africa. Reports earlier in 2025 indicated that Moscow was restoring and expanding its airbase infrastructure in Libya, potentially turning the country into a more important logistical and operational hub for russian activity across the Mediterranean and Africa.

The Libya shipment is not an isolated case. Earlier in 2026, russia was also reported to have supplied BMP-3 vehicles to Madagascar and Tigr armored vehicles to Togo. These exports suggest Moscow continues prioritizing defense diplomacy and arms sales even while fighting a high-intensity war in Ukraine.
