Why russia Needs New Foam Plastic Drones and Their Cost

The russian military has two new, inexpensive drones for various tasks

Andriy Cherniak, a spokesperson for the military intelligence agency, told Reuters that the two new types of drones used by russia in five attacks over the past two to three weeks are made from materials such as foam plastic and plywood.

One type carries a camera and a Ukrainian mobile phone SIM card to send images back to the russian military.

"They identify where our mobile groups are positioned, where the machine guns are that can destroy them. They're trying ... to get a picture of where all our air defences are located," said Cherniak.

The second new type of drone, which carries no explosive charge or only a minimal one, is used primarily as a decoy.

Because it is virtually indistinguishable from a regular attack drone from the ground, it still needs to be shot down, revealing where Ukraine's air defense systems are located.

Cherniak noted that these new drones likely cost as little as $10,000 each despite their long range, making them significantly cheaper to produce than air defense missiles. Additionally, these drones can fly at an altitude of 1,000 meters (3,000 feet), placing them beyond the range of machine guns and automatic rifles.
