With TITUS, the Czech army has moved from Warsaw Pact–era command vehicles to the latest armored cars with digital control systems

The Armed Forces of the Czech Republic reported receipt of the last batch of Titus vehicles from Nexter Systems (part of KNDS). The vehicles were assembled within the country at the workshops of Tatra's defense-segment factories.

The totality of Titus supplied to the Czech army amounts to 62 units, of which 42 were equipped as the command and communication version, and another 20 for artillery fire control. The total value of the order, commissioned back in 2019, was EUR 240 million.

Thus, the notional cost of a modern commander's vehicle based on this contract is roughly €3.9 million per unit. But, of course, the lion's share of this amount accounts not for the chassis but to the insides of the car. Although taking into account that Titus itself is quite a costly 27-ton 6x6 wheeled armored vehicle.

In particular, in the command and communication version, the vehicle is equipped with encrypted digital radio stations from L3Harris: three multi-band AN/PRC-117G radios, one AN/PRC-160(V) Wideband HF/VHF radio, and an RF-7800M-V150 multiband amplifier, as well as an RF-7800B-VU104 Land Mobile BGAN Terminal connected to Inmarsat satellites for beyond-line-of-sight communications.

With the introduction of Titus, the Czech military communication personnel phase out the previous command vehicles based on both technologically and physically outdated Praga V3S chassis. According to Czech Defense Ministry's archive recordings, some of the Praga V3S vehicles were aged 35 to 40 y.o. These were 3.3-ton trucks with an open trailer in base variant, modified and equipped based on the purpose.

As for the artillery fire control vehicle, it's currently only compatible with the vz.77 Dana self-propelled guns in the Czech Armed Forces. The main tool of this system is the ADLER III C4FS system modified for the needs of the Czech Army.

ADLER III C4FS is a digital information exchange and control system from Germany-based ESG. It is actively used in the Bundeswehr and in addition to controlling and coordinating the fire of artillery units, it allows the aviation units to join the network.
