Colombia last year signed a contract for the delivery of 17 Gripen E/F fighters with delivery timelines spanning 2027 to 2032

Colombia has signed an agreement to modernize runways and overall infrastructure for the future operation of its upcoming Gripen E/F fighters from Saab the corresponding agreement was signed at the end of last year, on December 31, between the country's aerospace forces and the ASA consortium, which will serve as the main contractor.

The modernization covers the aerospace forces' main airbase named after Captain Germán Olano, which hosts the 1st Combat Aviation Squadron. The contract value is $91 million, with all work to be completed by November 30, 2028 nearly three years. This is reported by Infodefensa publication.

It is noted that the airbase must meet all airspace operation standards and technical requirements according to documentation from Gripen fighter manufacturer Saab.

Specifically, there are strict requirements for runways no less than 1,000 meters long and 17 meters wide with an average slope not exceeding 1°, high-quality surface coverage, and taxiways at a distance of no less than 20 meters.

Additionally, a main hangar of 7,800 square meters will be built with eight parking spots and two repair bays. It will be two-level and combine offices, warehouses, workshops, and more.

Among everything planned is the construction of a series of auxiliary facilities equipment storage (240 sq. m), weapons storage (70 sq. m), data analysis offices, weapons calibration workshops, and a Gripen EW laboratory of 175 sq. m.

Also included are eight bunker-type hangars, as well as a quick reaction bunker with four parking spots and an aircraft preparation zone with walls 1.2 meters thick and a completely sealed roof.

Finally, a tactical training center will occupy 1,650 sq. m with Saab offices, four simulators, a secure room for restricted access operations, and more.

Recall that in November, Colombia signed a firm agreement to purchase JAS 39 Gripen fighters, ordering a total of 17 aircraft in the E/F version for $4.25 billion, with a separate audit conducted to confirm the transparency and legality of the cost.

Colombia is scheduled to receive its first fighter in 2027, with deliveries continuing through 2032 according to the established plan.

Earlier, Defense Express reported why Saab won't eliminate the main weak spot of Gripen fighters.
