A major ammunition depot near Neya in Kostroma region was set ablaze following Ukrainian strike, triggering evacuations and secondary explosions more than 900 km from Ukraine

Ukrainian forces have reportedly struck another strategic ammunition storage facility belonging to the armed forces of russia, the 100th GRAU Arsenal located near the town of Neya in Kostroma region. This marks at least the fifth confirmed strike on a strategic-level arsenal, not counting other large ammunition depots targeted earlier.

According to official statements, a fire broke out on the territory of the arsenal following the strike, prompting the evacuation of the nearby settlement. Videos circulating from the scene capture the distinct sounds of secondary detonations, consistent with ammunition cooking off inside storage facilities. Local authorities also reported damage to several residential buildings, noting that affected structures were located roughly two kilometers from the arsenal.

The strike is particularly notable due to the distance involved. The 100th GRAU Arsenal is the most remote facility of its class known to have been hit by Ukrainian forces to date, located more than 900 kilometers from Ukraine's border. Previously, the most distant confirmed strike was against the 51st GRAU Arsenal near Moscow. There were also unconfirmed reports in December 2024 of a successful attack on the 13th GRAU Arsenal, situated about 700 kilometers from the border.

The depth of this strike underscores Ukraine's growing ability to reach high-value military infrastructure far inside russian territory. Strategic GRAU arsenals play a critical role in sustaining large-scale military operations, serving as hubs for the storage and distribution of artillery shells, missiles, and other munitions to frontline units.

Open-source intelligence suggests that the 100th GRAU Arsenal was actively used by the russian military. High-resolution satellite imagery publicly available prior to the strike showed noticeable movement and reconfiguration of stacked ammunition crates, indicating ongoing logistical activity rather than long-term mothballing.

While the exact types and quantities of ammunition stored at the site at the time of the strike remain unknown, the potential scale of losses can be estimated. For comparison, the 51st GRAU Arsenal, which covers an area of approximately 3.5 square kilometers, has a reported design storage capacity of up to 264,000 tons of ammunition.

The 100th GRAU Arsenal occupies an area of roughly 2 square kilometers, suggesting a theoretical capacity in the range of 150,000 tons. However, actual storage volumes may have differed significantly. The russian military has a documented history of violating storage standards, and the depot may not have been filled to its maximum design capacity at the time of the strike.

Regardless of the precise figures, the attack represents a significant logistical blow. The loss or degradation of such a distant and strategically important ammunition depot adds further strain to russia's supply system and highlights the expanding reach and strategic impact of Ukraine's long-range strike capabilities.
