In the intelligence center of the Estonian Defense Forces, it is believed that the russian armed forces are achieving certain successes when attacking Ukrainian positions from the flanks, rather than via direct assaults. However, their direct attacks have led to heavy losses and large-scale offensives cannot be carried out in several directions at the same time

Active combat operations are taking place in the Luhansk direction; several russian assault units have suffered significant losses there, said Colonel Ants Kiviselg, commander of the Estonian Defense Forces' (EDF) intelligence center.

According to him, these losses have led to desertions from some units.

From the Ukrainian perspective, a significant wave of attacks is expected from this direction, but not until the end of January or the beginning of February, by which time the ground will have frozen.

At the same time, the concentration of forces in one place means that similar offensive actions are not anticipated in other directions simply due to a lack of available troops, explained Colonel Kiviselg.

On the Donetsk front, russian forces are attempting to cut off the supply routes of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to Avdiivka. There, the russians also tried to launch attacks using armored vehicles. However, they were unsuccessful, Colonel Kiviselg said.

Nevertheless, russian forces have achieved some success south of Marinka. The key to this success lies in their avoidance of direct attacks with high casualties, opting instead for flanking maneuvers. "This requires well-trained and well-led units, fortunately there are not many of them in russia, but this is one of the few cases," the EDF colonel said.

In the Zaporizhzhia direction, russian forces have been launching attacks on the Kherson region. However, this activity has diminished. The primary reason for this decline is the predominant presence of marine units in the area, with airborne units showing reluctance to engage in offensive operations.

According to Colonel Ants Kiviselg, on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River, the bridgeheads set up by Ukraine are still holding, despite continued attacks from russian forces. However, the freezing of the river means both the Ukrainians and russians face problems in getting supplies to their troops there.

As Defense Express reported, the Armed Forces of Ukraine eliminated approximately 374,520 russian invaders from February 24, 2022, to January 19, 2024, with 920 of them being neutralized in the last 24 hours.
