German manufacturer introduces advanced threat detection and countermeasures for Ukrainian helicopters

Hensoldt, one of the leading German manufacturers of avionics and sensor systems, has announced the supply of an airborne missile protection system (AMPS) to Ukraine. This system combines threat detection and countermeasures against missiles using laser, infrared and radar guidance.

“With the delivery of AMPS, we are ensuring an increase in the defence capability of the Ukrainian helicopters,” says Tanya Altmann, Division Manager Optronics & Land Solutions and Managing Director of Hensoldt Optronics GmbH. “By integrating onto this platform for the first time, we are protecting crews from a wide range of threats, especially surface-to-air and air-to-air missiles.”

The AMPS system itself consists of sensor that, depending on the configuration, include cameras for all-round surveillance, laser detectors and radar detectors. The system autonomously analyzes threats, provides alerts and performs automatic decoy flare dispensing. Additionally, the most advanced version of AMPS-MD includes the installation of an active countermeasures complex against infrared-guided missiles, achieved by blinding their seekers.

The order comprises 16 AMPS sensor solutions. The order value is in the double-digit million range. The integration of AMPS systems into Ukrainian helicopters will be carried out by the Czech company LOM Praha, which offers the modernization of helicopters such as Mi-8, Mi-17 and Mi-24, including the installation of such systems. They will also handle the integration of other equipment, including optical sighting stations and digital cockpits.

It should be noted that Hensoldt entered into a contract with Airbus Helicopters to supply AMPS for the H145M helicopters in 2019. Additionally, in 2022, the company received an order from the Bundeswehr to equip AMPS on all 82 NH90 helicopters in service with the land forces.
