The Armed Forces of Ukraine have included the obsolete Grad-1 MLRS to the list of destroyed russian equipment. They are forced to apply it due to the serious losses of their weapons and military equipment in the war in Ukraine.

So, in the video of the Ukrainian Air Assault Forces Command you can see the Soviet Grad-1 multiple launch rocket system, which was probably damaged during the fighting and abandoned by the russian military. This is the first time that information about this version of the destroyed MLRS appeared in open sources.

For the first time, de-conserved Grad-1 multiple launch rocket system appeared in mid-April of this year, the vehicles were spotted in the russian city of Tyumen and were traveling to the west of the russian federation, probably to reinforce units in Ukraine.

This MLRS, in fact, is a light version of the BM-21 Grad on the ZIL-131 chassis, was adopted in 1976 and was intended primarily for equipping marine infantry units.

The vehicle has 36 missiles (as opposed to 40 in the BM-21 Grad), as well as a maximum range of 15 km. In the Military Balance you can find information that as of 2021, russia had at least 420 Grad-1 vehicles in storage.

On the one hand, of course, you can say that a weapon is a weapon and the russians will definitely apply it on the battlefield. On the other hand, the condition and quantity of these vehicles removed from russia’s storage bases is not known.
