Bundestag approves additional 155 mm ammunition procurement for €880 million

The Federal Ministry of Defense announced on its official website that the Bundestag’s Budget Committee approved the procurement of additional 155 mm artillery ammunition on June 5. This ammunition will replenish the German army’s reserves and support Ukraine as part of defense assistance.

The Ministry emphasized the significant expenditure of 155 mm artillery ammunition by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It also highlighted the importance of maintaining and expanding Germany’s own reserves in light of the current global security situation. The procurement, totaling 880 million euros, will be financed from both the Bundeswehr’s special funds and the defense budget.

While the announcement did not specify the number of shells to be produced, earlier reports from Western media indicate an order from Rheinmetall for 200,000 rounds. This suggests a rough cost of 4,400 euros (approximately 4,788 dollars) per shell. The agreement also allows for participation from other countries, with ongoing negotiations with Denmark, Estonia and the Netherlands.

Additionally, Ukraine is set to receive its first batch of artillery shells this month under the Czech initiative, with a total of 500,000 rounds to be delivered by the end of the year.
