How critical assistance to Ukraine can be complicated by elections

In early May of this year, Romania announced its intention to provide Ukraine with one of its Patriot SAM systems. However, official Bucharest publicly raised the issue of compensators, which is quite logical. It is known that Romania still uses the S-75M3 SAM systems.

But a week later, the issue began to slow down due to domestic political issues in this country. No sooner had the Romanian president spoken about Patriot SAM system for the Armed Forces of Ukraine than the government started doubting.

A month later the prospect of the transfer of one of Romanian Petriot system to Ukraine now looks as remote as it was earlier. However, during this period, russians managed to conduct three strikes against Ukraine's energy system, which only exacerbates the need for additional air defense capabilities.

Defense Romania publisher decided to find out at what stage the story of the possible transfer of Patriot to Ukraine is now.

At first glance, the authors of this publication list all the arguments that Romanian military and political leadership had previously made. They seem to need a compensator instead of the Petriot system that they can give to Ukraine. The price of the issue is also an important aspect. However, Defense Romania emphasizes that parliamentary and local elections are to be held in Romania in a week, and this explains a lot.

This is not about a possible unwillingness to irritate the electorate with the "unpopular" idea that the country should send a part of its air defense capabilities. Rather, we are talking about the fact that the Romanian government has actually entered a "transitional" period of the electoral cycle. That is why politicians are focused on the only one issue: elections and the possible transfer of power.

And this is specific moment for Ukraine. It seems that there is nothing complicated about transferring Patriot system, even if elections are coming up in a week. But nevertheless, this has become a challenge that will have to be taken into account.
