Recent Ukrainian strikes on russian logistical targets within russia are set to increase operational pressure on russian forces, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). These strikes are aimed at disrupting ammunition depots and supply lines, potentially forcing russia to reorganize its logistics.
The ISW notes that similar Ukrainian operations were conducted in the summer of 2022, using the HIMARSs to target russian depots in occupied Ukraine. This led to a dispersal of russian ammunition storage, which weakened their logistics. Recent strikes, such as the one on Toropets, could prompt a similar response from russian military commanders, causing them to further disperse logistical facilities within the territory.

Interestingly, many russian logistical sites remain vulnerable, partly due to restrictions on Ukraine’s use of Western-supplied weapons. Toropets, for example, lies beyond the reach of these systems. However, the ISW suggests that lifting these restrictions or enhancing Ukraine’s long-range strike capabilities could increase the effectiveness of Ukrainian operations.
The report also highlights the July 2024 strike on a russian ammunition depot near Sergeyevka in Voronezh region, suggesting that such actions could significantly deplete russia’s material reserves. These strikes, if sustained and supported by expanded capabilities, could influence the entire front line of operations in Ukraine.
