According to the 23rd Assault Regiment R.U.G. of the 2nd Corps of Ukraine's National Guard Khartiia, the assault operation took place between April and May 2026 on one of the most difficult sectors of the front. Assault groups crossed the line of combat engagement and cleared russian forward positions deep into a company-level strongpoint.
The objective was to force russian troops out of fortified positions and expand Ukrainian-controlled territory near Vovchansk, where heavy fighting has continued for months.

The regiment stated that the success of the assault was made possible through coordinated actions between infantry, reconnaissance, and supporting units. Ukrainian troops reportedly cleared the entire targeted section of the russian defensive line.
"The 23rd Assault Regiment R.U.G. continues carrying out combat missions on the most difficult sectors of the front, demonstrating the effectiveness of coordinated assault operations," the regiment said.
Video released by the unit shows Ukrainian assault troops advancing through heavily damaged urban areas and wooded terrain under combat conditions.
The fighting around Vovchansk remains one of the key flashpoints on the northeastern front. russian forces have repeatedly attempted to establish a so-called buffer zone in the Kharkiv region by increasing pressure on border settlements and launching attacks toward the town.
Despite constant artillery fire and airstrikes that have devastated much of Vovchansk, Ukrainian forces continue to hold positions in the southern part of the city.
The regiment also highlighted the participation of foreign volunteers serving alongside Ukrainian personnel in National Guard units operating near Vovchansk.
