The operation targeted russian Orion UAVs capable of carrying guided bombs and precision missiles

Operators from Ukraine's Defense Intelligence Kabul 9 special unit have destroyed two russian Orion unmanned aerial vehicles at an airfield in Kerch, delivering another blow to russia's reconnaissance and strike capabilities in Crimea. The operation reportedly took place on July 2.

The Orion is one of russia's most capable domestically produced medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned combat aircraft. Developed by the Kronstadt Group, the platform combines intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and strike functions, making it one of the more valuable UAVs in russia's inventory.

Weighing approximately one metric ton, the Orion has an operational radius of around 250-300 kilometers and can remain airborne for up to 30 hours. Its endurance enables persistent reconnaissance missions and precision strike operations, allowing russian forces to monitor the battlefield and engage targets far from the launch site.

Beyond reconnaissance, the Orion is capable of carrying a range of precision-guided weapons, including guided aerial bombs as well as Kh-50, Kh-BPLA, and Banderol munitions. This versatility allows the drone to perform both intelligence gathering and direct attack missions against military and infrastructure targets.

The financial impact of the strike is also significant. The two destroyed Orion drones were worth more than $10 million combined, representing a notable material loss in addition to the operational setback.
