Ukrainian forces are employing balloons for various air operations, including an unconventional method of delivering strike drones deep into russian-controlled territory. The approach allows unmanned aerial vehicles to be transported closer to their targets before being released.

Rather than relying entirely on their own flight endurance, strike drones can be carried by balloons over considerable distances. This potentially allows them to reach targets located deep in the enemy’s operational rear while reducing the distance they must cover under their own power.
The concept could offer several advantages, particularly when targeting facilities located far from the front line. By deploying drones closer to their intended destinations, Ukrainian forces may be able to extend the effective reach of relatively small unmanned systems.
Balloons can also provide an alternative means of transporting aerial payloads, potentially complicating russian efforts to detect and intercept incoming threats. Unlike conventional UAVs, balloons do not necessarily require continuous powered flight during the transportation stage.
Meanwhile, balloons have recently been spotted in Moscow region, far beyond the front line.
