A key russian air defense radar used for early warning was hit, weakening detection capabilities near the border

Ukrainian forces have struck a key element of russia's air defense network deep inside Belgorod region, targeting russian Kasta-2E radar station near the settlement of Volotovo, approximately 80 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. The operation was carried out by crews of the Achilles 429th Brigade.

Kasta-2E radar is a mobile, three-dimensional surveillance system designed to detect and track aerial targets, particularly those flying at low and extremely low altitudes. Its role within russia's air defense architecture is crucial, as it provides early warning data that feeds into surface-to-air missile systems and command centers.

According to available specifications, the radar is capable of simultaneously tracking up to 200 targets within a radius of approximately 150 kilometers. This includes aircraft, cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles, making it a versatile and valuable asset in countering a wide range of aerial threats.

By targeting such a system, Ukrainian forces are not merely destroying equipment but degrading russia's situational awareness. The loss or disruption of Kasta-2E radar reduces the effectiveness of air defense units in the area, potentially creating gaps in detection coverage that can be exploited by subsequent strikes.

As Defense Express previously reported, Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces have reported a series of successful strikes against high-value russian air defense systems over the past week, underscoring a continued focus on degrading the enemy's layered air defense network.
