Ukraine has deployed a large-scale electronic warfare network across Kyiv to disrupt Mesh radio communications used by russian operators to remotely control jet-powered Shahed drones

Ukraine has conducted a large-scale electronic warfare operation to protect Kyiv from russian jet-powered Shahed drones equipped with remote-control capabilities, creating an electronic warfare shield over the capital to disrupt the communication links used to control the UAVs.

The operation was aimed at countering Mesh radio communication technology, which allows russian operators to control Shahed drones remotely from russian territory. Radio modems installed on the drones enable operators to maintain communication with the UAVs and potentially search for and engage targets while the drones are in flight.

To counter this capability, Ukraine set out to establish an electronic warfare shield over Kyiv that would interfere with the radio communication links between the drones and their operators.

The task was particularly ambitious, as it required extensive work across the entire city within just a few weeks. Hundreds of locations had to be equipped with antennas and electronic warfare systems to provide the necessary coverage.

All major Ukrainian electronic warfare manufacturers were involved in the effort, working around the clock to produce and install the required equipment. The operation also involved the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the National Security and Defense Council, the Presidential Office, and other units.

According to the report, the operation was subject to continuous oversight by the President of Ukraine. Its complexity was not limited to the technical challenges of disrupting drone communications but also involved coordinating equipment production, deployment, and installation across hundreds of locations throughout the capital.

The operation reportedly forced russian forces to pause their use of this approach, upgrade their Shahed drones, and search for alternative technical solutions. This suggests that the electronic warfare shield disrupted the effectiveness of the remote-control technology, prompting russia to adapt its UAV capabilities.
