What we should know about this reinforcement from an important partner to the Ukrainian Navy

On 30 January 2025, Sweden announced a new military aid package for Ukraine, including the transfer of 16 CB90 boats, in addition to the previously delivered boats of the same type.

Sweden announced its intention to allocate the CB90 boats in the spring of 2024. The transfer of these boats and the start of crew training in Romania were announced in September last year, but so far, there has been no mention of this equipment or its use in the Ukrainian Navy in public sources.

A video report by the Bryz TV studio of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has now been released, marking the first mention of Swedish CB90 assault boats in service with the Ukrainian Navy.

For instance, it is stated that the compact dimensions of the CB90 allow these boats to operate freely even on inland waterways and reach unequipped shorelines without damage. In addition, these boats are characterized by excellent handling and high maneuverability.

The characteristics of the CB90, particularly its power plant, allow these boats to be deployed at sea in the shortest possible time. In addition, these boats are ergonomically designed for all crew members, including the gunner of the turret.

The video does not provide details about the CB90's equipment for tasks in the open sea or any potential combat operations that may have already taken place in Ukraine.

Although the title of the video, "Mine clearance operations in the Black Sea," suggests that the Swedish CB90s in the Ukrainian Navy could theoretically be used to support the operation of the "grain corridor" from the ports of Odesa.

It is worth recalling the characteristics of the CB90. These assault boats have a hull length of 15.9 meters and a width of 3.8 meters, a displacement of up to 23 tons, and a crew capacity of three, with room for 21 passengers.

The CB90 is equipped with a 12.7 mm machine gun or a 40 mm automatic grenade launcher. However, according to some reports, this type of boat can also carry four mines or six depth charges, enabling it to perform tasks related to protecting sea communications.

Earlier Defense Express reported that Sweden had joined hands with Ukraine to develop a deep strike missile.
