The 4.6 billion kronor package focuses on new acquisitions, highlighting potential future transfers of the Gripen fighter jets

The Swedish government has formally announced the allocation of its 17th aid package to Ukraine, valued at approximately 4.6 billion Swedish kronor (around 400 million euros). Unlike previous packages focused on the transfer of existing weapons, this package emphasizes the procurement of new military equipment.

The package includes weaponry, military equipment and ammunition. Of particular note is the mention of Gripen fighter jets, although no jets are being transferred at this time. However, half of the allocated funds, totaling 2.3 billion kronor (200 million euros), are designated for the purchase of components for the JAS 39C/D Gripen aircraft. These components will be repurposed in the production of the newer JAS 39E aircraft, a modernized version with significant upgrades, including changes to wing size.

“By acquiring new material parts, a certain number of the JAS 39C/D jets will be preserved from dismantling, allowing for their potential future transfer to Ukraine, pending a decision by the Swedish government,” reads the repot. However, this transfer remains delayed due to concerns that it could complicate Ukraine’s efforts to acquire the F-16 fighters. Nevertheless, Sweden continues to explore the possibility of a future delivery of the JAS 39 Gripen aircraft to Ukraine.

The allocation of funds for the Gripen components signals a strong indication that a future transfer may be on the horizon. However, this process is likely contingent upon the U.S. approval, as American components are integral to Swedish Gripen jets. Without the U.S. consent, Sweden cannot formally commit to the transfer.

In addition to the Gripen components, the aid package includes 500 million kronor (43.5 million euros) for the purchase of the RBS 70 MANPADSs, which are already in use by Ukrainian forces, though the exact quantity has not been specified. A similar amount will be used to procure six CB90 fast assault boats for Ukraine.

The package also includes anti-tank weapons, such as grenade launchers and mines, as well as ammunition for previously supplied CV90 infantry fighting vehicles. Additionally, camouflage systems will be purchased for 200 Pbv 302 armored personnel carriers.
