Nigerian nationals are reportedly being recruited under false job promises and later deployed to fight against Ukraine after arriving in russia

According to Ukraine's Defense Intelligence, russian forces continue to recruit foreign nationals, including citizens of Nigeria, to fight in the war against Ukraine, often through deceptive or coercive schemes that resemble labor trafficking rather than voluntary enlistment.

The latest reported case concerns a Nigerian citizen, Ayebusiwa Olabode Victor, who was allegedly recruited into russia's military structure and later killed in Kharkiv region. His case is presented as part of a broader pattern rather than an isolated incident.

According to these reports, the recruitment process often begins with promises of legitimate employment opportunities in russia. Recruits are reportedly offered travel arrangements and job contracts, only to have their documents confiscated upon arrival.

Once in russia, some individuals are allegedly pressured or forced into signing military contracts. After that point, they are deployed to combat zones in Ukraine, frequently with minimal training or understanding of the terms under which they were recruited.

This is as a structured system of deceptive recruitment targeting vulnerable individuals from African countries. Nigeria is cited as one of the states whose citizens have been affected, alongside others from the region.

The issue has also gained diplomatic attention, with reports indicating that Nigerian authorities have previously called for an end to the recruitment of their citizens for participation in russia's war effort. However, allegations suggest that such practices continue despite these objections.
