Despite talks of 20, 12, or even just 6 Mirage 2000-5F aircraft being transferred to Ukraine, the French Ministry of Defense report shows a different number

The annual report of the French Ministry of Defense, detailing the country's weapons and military equipment, revealed how many Mirage 2000-5F fighter jets Ukraine could receive.

According to the Chiffres clés de la défense 2025 report, available on the French Ministry of Defense website, the French Air Force had 23 Mirage 2000-5F aircraft as of December 31, 2024. At the same time, last year's report listed 28 aircraft.

Meanwhile, the two-seater Mirage 2000Bs have been entirely converted into training aircraft for Mirage 2000D and Mirage 2000-5 pilots.

When the reinforcement of the Ukrainian Air Force with Mirage 2000-5 jets was announced earlier this year, Ukraine could receive no more than five aircraft withdrawn from the French Air Force.

At the same time, it should be noted that Paris has never disclosed the number of aircraft transferred to Ukraine, nor commented on the estimates published by various media outlets.

In particular, different figures have been cited for the Mirage 2000-5Fs available in France: 20 in fully combat-ready condition, 12 as the most likely number, and six as a compromise based on France's need to maintain the combat capability of its Air Force.

It should also be noted that the five Mirage 2000-5Fs that were taken out of service represent the maximum number of aircraft that could have been transferred. One aircraft may have remained in France for pilot and technician trainings, meaning that only four were actually transferred. It should also be recalled that one French fighter jet was lost on July 22, 2025, due to a certain emergency situation, but the pilot successfully ejected.

It should be noted that, despite all the speculation, there is currently no information on any concrete steps to transfer additional Mirage 2000-5s, either from France or from other countries that appeared interested in forming a Mirage 2000 coalition.
