Period has been placed on the question of how many Patriot SAM system missiles Ukraine genuinely received for intercepting ballistic targets.
After several media outlets incorrectly translated EU Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius's words, and instead of Ukraine needing 700 Patriot missiles this winter, it came out that Ukraine allegedly used such a quantity, this became subject of speculation.

Clarity on this question was brought by The New York Times, which in a publication dedicated to Ukraine's assistance to Persian Gulf countries and the U.S. in repelling iranian drone attacks, quoted Ukrainian presidential advisor Dmytro Lytvyn. According to him, Ukraine used approximately 600 modern surface-to-air missiles for Patriot SAM systems overall throughout the entire time.
Defense Express immediately clarifies that the specific surface-to-air missile type is not specified. However, obviously this involves means necessary for countering specifically ballistic targets, meaning either older CRI or new MSE in serial production, which are used by Patriot PAC-3 against ballistic targets.

Ukraine received its first Patriot approximately around April 2023, almost exactly three years ago. At the same time, Patriot ammunition supply was not uniform, with shortages becoming chronically critical. Specifically in 2025, there were cases when anti-ballistic missiles for Patriot were insufficient and launchers could sometimes stand empty. Specifically this occurred during russian winter attacks on Kyiv's critical infrastructure, as reported by Air Force command.
How inadequate 600 Patriot interceptors were over three years is shown by the fact that just over winter 2025-2026, russia launched approximately 250 ballistic, aeroballistic and hypersonic missiles at Ukraine according to Air Force statistics.
At the same time, asset shortage led Ukrainian Patriot operators to be forced to expend only one MSE missile per ballistic target engagement. Specifically this is clearly visible in video from the 96th Kyiv Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade intercepting russian ballistic missiles in February 2026.
For comparison, video can be provided from Patriot interception of iranian ballistic missiles, but in Qatar. When 15-16 interceptors were launched at 3-4 targets. Which incidentally may quite possibly be evidence that russia modified iranian ballistic missiles to pass by Patriot SAM systems.
Against this background, the question regarding Patriot anti-ballistic missile production becomes maximally urgent. This is precisely why Washington was not satisfied with promises to produce 2,000 Patriot missiles by 2033, as they are needed right now and not only for Ukraine. However, there is enormous difficulty in multiplicative production increases.
