The Czech Republic is preparing to significantly bolster Ukraine's armored capabilities with a new batch of modernized T-72 tanks. According to Radio Prague International, the Chief of the General Staff of the Czech Armed Forces, Karel Řehka, will recommend that the government provide Ukraine with 30 upgraded T-72M4CZ tanks free of charge. The vehicles are currently undergoing final repairs at the state-owned defense enterprise VOP CZ.
This potential transfer continues Prague's active support for Ukraine, which began with the early supply of Soviet-origin tanks in 2022. However, unlike the older models previously sent, the T-72M4CZ tank is a deeply modernized variant featuring major improvements in mobility, protection, and situational awareness, making it one of the most advanced versions of the T-72 family in Europe.

At the heart of the modernization is British Perkins CV12 engine, delivering 1,000 horsepower and dramatically improving the tank's power-to-weight ratio. This engine, also used in some Challenger tank variants, enables the Czech T-72M4CZ tank to maneuver more effectively on the battlefield, even under the demanding conditions of Ukraine's varied terrain.
Protection systems have also been upgraded to meet modern threats. The tanks are fitted with the DYNA-72 explosive reactive armor, capable of countering shaped-charge and tandem warheads, significantly enhancing crew survivability against anti-tank guided missiles and RPGs.
Another key enhancement is the TRALL electronic countermeasure system, a joint Czech-Israeli development designed to protect against magnetic and proximity-triggered mines. This system represents an important technological leap in battlefield survivability, as mine warfare remains a persistent danger along the front lines in the east and south of Ukraine.
The possible donation of these tanks comes at a critical time when Ukraine continues to seek modern armored vehicles to maintain its defensive and offensive capabilities. With Western deliveries of heavy equipment slowing and russian forces attempting to regain initiative, such contributions could help sustain Ukraine's ability to maneuver and respond effectively.
If approved by the Czech government, the transfer of 30 T-72M4CZ tanks would not only reinforce Ukraine's armored units but also symbolize another act of European solidarity.
