Military expert and chief editor of Defense Express, Oleh Katkov, has highlighted Ukraine’s limited but significant ability to strike deep into russian territory using domestically produced drones. His remarks came during a broadcast on Espreso, where he addressed the recent changes in Western restrictions on the use of their weapons.
Oleh Katkov criticized previous limitations imposed by Ukraine’s allies, stating that the restriction on striking russian territory had put Ukraine in an unjust and inhumane defensive position. He pointed out that while Ukraine was barred from targeting russian military infrastructure, no such restrictions were placed on russia, allowing it to attack Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure without constraint.

Now that these restrictions have been lifted, Ukraine has more operational freedom, but challenges remain. The country lacks Western-supplied long-range systems, meaning it must rely solely on its own capabilities. Oleh Katkov emphasized that Ukraine possesses domestically produced drones with a maximum range of 2,500 km, but no Western missiles capable of reaching deep into russian territory.
Despite the policy shift, Ukraine continues to face an enemy with superior resources and unrestricted strike capabilities. While Ukrainian forces have successfully targeted russian positions, such as a recent precision strike on a command post near Novoivanivka, the disparity in available weaponry remains a key factor in the ongoing war.
