The modernization of the Soviet BTR-60 vehicle, the Khorunzhyi APC, delivers unmatched speed, armor and firepower for Ukrainian military

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has codified and approved for supply to the Armed Forces of Ukraine the Khorunzhyi armored personnel carrier (APC), which is the result of a deep modernization of Soviet BTR-60 vehicle.

The hull of Ukrainian armored personnel carrier is made of high-quality Finnish steel, which has improved the vehicle’s ballistic protection without increasing its weight. The hull is also protected around the perimeter from 7.62 mm caliber bullets with steel cores, and the frontal armor can withstand shots from a large-caliber machine gun at a distance of 10 meters.

The design of the hull’s bottom and special anti-mine seats protect the crew from the effects of explosions equivalent to 6 kg of TNT.

The Khorunzhyi APC is significantly more powerful than the BTR-60 vehicle, as instead of two 90-horsepower gasoline engines, a 330-horsepower diesel engine is installed in the front part of new Ukrainian APC. This engine accelerates the combat vehicle to a speed of over 80 km/h, and the capacity of the fuel tanks provides a range of over 500 kilometers.

A completely redesigned hull layout has improved ergonomics and made disembarking more convenient through the vehicle’s rear.

The Khorunzhyi vehicle is equipped with modern electronics, including video surveillance cameras, an air conditioning system and an autonomous generator, enabling it to operate even with the engine off.

The APC is armed with a combat module that can be fitted with either a 14.5 mm machine gun or a 30x113 mm cannon.

The vehicle is available in six variants: a standard armored personnel carrier, a troop transporter, a medical evacuation vehicle, a repair and recovery vehicle, a command and staff vehicle and a self-propelled mortar vehicle.
