New Ukrainian drone system powered by artificial intelligence can autonomously strike enemy targets up to 300 km away without GPS

Ukraine has made a significant leap in drone warfare by deploying an artificial intelligence-based mother drone system for the first time. Developed under the Brave1 defense cluster, this innovation marks a new era in autonomous strike capability on the battlefield. The system represents a blend of precision, technological autonomy, and cost-effectiveness rarely seen in modern conflict.

At the heart of this advancement is the mother drone platform, designed to carry and launch two FPV drones. With an operational range of up to 300 kilometers, the system can autonomously detect, select, and destroy a wide array of targets, including enemy aircraft, air defense systems, and critical infrastructure.

The drones operate without human intervention once launched, using AI to recognize and prioritize targets. Notably, if the mission requires travel within a 100-kilometer radius, the mother drone is programmed to return to base for reuse. This increases sustainability and reduces overall mission costs.

One of the most revolutionary aspects of the system is its complete independence from GPS. Instead of relying on satellite navigation, the SmartPilot onboard system uses visual-inertial navigation, relying on camera data for orientation. LiDAR technology complements this system, boosting precision in complex or cluttered environments.

Cost efficiency is another key strength. A single mission using this AI drone system costs approximately $10,000. In stark contrast, the cost of launching a missile ranges from 300 to 500 times more. This economic advantage could significantly shift cost-benefit calculations in ongoing drone warfare.

The autonomy granted to artificial intelligence in this context represents a growing trend in defense technology: minimizing human oversight while increasing strike speed and decision-making precision. The system's AI is capable of independently analyzing terrain, identifying enemy assets, and launching attacks without remote control inputs – a potentially game-changing capability in large-scale warfare.
