Joint declaration strengthens Ukraine’s defenses with multiple advanced systems

At the 75th NATO summit in the U.S., where bolstering Ukraine with weaponry is a key focus, Washington has announced the transfer of another Patriot battery to Ukraine.

This information is outlined in a joint declaration from the leaders of the U.S., the Netherlands, Germany, Romania, Italy and Ukraine, which details the strengthening of Ukraine’s air defense systems. Each of these countries is contributing additional strategic air defense systems, including the Patriot, and Italy is providing the SAMP-T system. While the participation of the Netherlands, Germany, Romania, and Italy in this effort was known, the provision of an additional Patriot system from the US had only been rumored until now.

Consequently, Ukraine can now expect five such strategic systems. The declaration also mentions that the countries will work towards further announcements this year regarding additional strategic air defense systems for Ukraine. Additionally, over the next few months, the U.S. and its partners plan to supply Ukraine with dozens of tactical air defense systems, specifically the NASAMS, MIM-23 HAWK, IRIS T-SLM, IRIS T-SLS and Gepard. However, this likely pertains to the fulfillment of previously announced deliveries rather than new, unannounced systems.

The declaration further emphasizes that Ukraine has been prioritized for receiving air defense missiles, with hundreds of additional interceptors anticipated over the next year. Moreover, under the USAI program, the latest aid package includes $2.2 billion allocated exclusively for the Patriot and NASAMS missiles.
