Lack of armored vehicles forces russia to use the kind of those, which had been previously presented to Serbia and Myanmar

The Ministry of Defense of the russian federation announced that they had found a new weapon for the remnants of their landing forces: modernized BRDM-2MS Soviet armored scout vehicles. The military contingent of "partially mobilized" is already training on these vehicles near the front line to be the new reinforcements for upcoming battles against the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The russians say that their BRDM-2MS’s have significant improvements over the base model.

In particular, two pairs of pneumatic wheels were removed (in theory they provide better passability). Instead, two additional hatches are cut into the sides of the car. The commander's place is equipped with a new three-channel panoramic sight, which is said to provide a view of up to 5km during the day and up to 3.5km at night. Also, there are six cameras installed in the BRDM-2MS, which seem to provide the crew with a circular view, the image is displayed on black and white screens.

An additional armor plate is installed under the bottom, and a set of 6-milimeters-thick plates is installed to protect the sides. A diesel engine is installed instead of a gasoline one.

The russian army has almost never used the BRDM-2 since 24.02. Oryx estimates that the russians lost only 3 BRDM-2s in battles against the Armed Forces of Ukraine. As for the BRDM-2MS modification, russia has generally distributed such armored vehicles to its satellites free of charge. For example, Serbia received 30 units in 2021, Myanmar received 33 BRDM-2MS’s in 2019.

According to The Military Balance, by the end of 2021, the russian army had 1,000 BRDM-2/BRDM-2A vehicles in service, and about 1,000 BRDM-2’s in storage bases.

BRDM-2MS is manufactured by the 103rd Repair Armored Plant of the Ministry of russia’s Defense of in Transbaikal. Therefore, it is not excluded that armored vehicles of this type for mobs were manufactured on an exclusive order for the occupying forces.
