Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation under the National Security and Defense Council has reported that russian forces have begun using the Shahed-type kamikaze drones equipped with capsules containing the CS (2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile) chemical agent.
This substance, commonly known as tear gas, is prohibited for use in warfare under the Chemical Weapons Convention and the Geneva Protocol of 1925.

The CS gas, first synthesized in 1928, is widely used by law enforcement for riot control. However, its use in military operations, especially against civilian populations, is a violation of international law. There have been previous reports of russian forces deploying CS-filled grenades from drones onto Ukrainian positions.

The Center for Countering Disinformation has debunked rumors that drone bodies are being coated with toxic substances, noting such claims could be part of russia’s information warfare tactics.
As Defense Express previously reported, russia has begun using drones to scatter explosive devices over Ukrainian territory, posing a new and unpredictable threat to civilians across the country. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, these drones are capable of operating in any region, with the first confirmed findings reported in Kyiv.
