The need for and proliferation of electronic warfare equipment, as one of the elements of countering drones, actually raises another level of problem: how to manage them

Because the approximated situation, when each armored vehicle and each position has a "trench EW" and the battalion and brigade systems are working "above them" at a higher level, raises a simple question: how to manage and interact with it. Because it is always necessary to remember that EW works in both directions.

And it is about these things that the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valerii Zaluzhnyi wrote in the work "Modern Positional Warfare And How To Win In It".

In the United States, just a few days ago, they officially announced the launch of only the first version, with limited functionality, or more precisely, only certain functions, of the EMBM-J Situational Awareness (Electromagnetic Battle Management – Joint.)

EMBM-J Situational Awareness is a minimum viable capability release, or the first iteration of the tool. The cloud-based platform, which aligns with Combined Joint All Domain Command and Control, integrates a range of electromagnetic spectrum capabilities and functions into one system that seamlessly gathers and arranges data into a single visual display.

While invisible to the naked eye, the spectrum has become an increasing strategic maneuver space in recent years, with adversaries seeking to block vital access that enables communications, precision weapons and navigation.

According to the US Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), "This tool ensures a commander’s ability to rapidly act by visualizing the EMS common operating picture and the first step toward achieving EMS superiority."

This cloud-based platform integrates various electromagnetic spectrum capabilities and functions into a single system that collects data into a single visual display, DISA said in a release. Without it, forces won’t be able to act faster than adversaries on the battlefield.

In simple terms, it is an automated system for exchanging information about the operation of all electronic warfare assets, and, accordingly, electronic intelligence, which flows to one center, is processed and distributed down to the lowest "infantry" level. That is, in fact, another "level" or "layer" will be added to the general automated command and control system with comprehensive information about this dimension of combat.

In words, it may be very simple, but in practice, it requires adding a connection to a common automated control system to each trench-based electronic warfare device. But this is indeed the only way to systematize and interact the use of these means together with all other components and capabilities of the armed forces.
