Ukrainian drone operators from the 1st Battalion of the 59th Brigade have struck russian TOS-1A Solntsepyok heavy flamethrower system. Footage of the operation was published by the battalion on January 29, showcasing another successful engagement against a high-value russian asset.
The TOS-1A system was detected with the assistance of a neighboring Ukrainian formation, highlighting continued coordination between unmanned systems units on the battlefield. Despite russian attempts to conceal the vehicle by painting it white, likely to blend with winter terrain, the camouflage proved ineffective against Ukrainian reconnaissance and targeting capabilities.

Once the target was confirmed, Ukrainian operators launched two FPV drones to strike the system. While the TOS-1A system was not completely destroyed, the battalion stated that the damage was significant enough to render the vehicle inoperable and in need of extensive repairs. As a result, the system is expected to remain out of combat for a prolonged period.
The battalion estimated the value of the damaged TOS-1A system at approximately $15 million, underscoring the cost-effectiveness of FPV drones compared to traditional heavy weapons. Even without total destruction, disabling such a platform delivers substantial operational and economic impact on russian forces.
The TOS-1A Solntsepyok system is among the most feared russian weapons systems, designed to fire thermobaric rockets that generate intense blast and heat effects. It has been repeatedly used against Ukrainian positions since the early stages of the full-scale invasion, often targeting fortified areas and urban environments.
As Defense Express previously reported, Ukrainian emergency services have recovered fragments of russian Iskander missile in an open area of the Chernihiv district, underscoring the persistent missile threat faced by regions far from the active front line.
The discovery was made by sappers from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine during routine clearance activities.
