Ukraine may need between 100 and 120 ballistic missile interceptors every month during the coming winter to maintain protection against russia's missile strikes, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Russia is currently producing around 140 ballistic missiles per month. He cited a NATO-standard interception ratio of two interceptor missiles for each ballistic missile targeted, which would theoretically require 280 interceptors to engage the entire monthly russian production.

However, obtaining such quantities of interceptors is not realistic under current production capacities. Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that even securing 100 interceptors per month would represent a major challenge, but identified 100-120 missiles as the amount Ukraine wants to have available during the coldest months.

The main systems involved in this requirement are U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems, which Ukraine relies on to engage russian ballistic missiles. The availability of compatible interceptors has become a critical factor in maintaining the effectiveness of Ukraine's air defense.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine could potentially receive additional interceptors either from U.S. stocks or directly from production. While Washington has the political will to help Ukraine obtain the missiles, he noted that current production volumes remain insufficient to quickly meet the required quantities.
This leaves existing U.S. stockpiles as another possible source. It remains unclear whether the United States would be willing to provide interceptors from its existing inventories, meaning that access to stored missiles could become particularly important ahead of winter.
Ukraine is also discussing possible deliveries with countries in the Middle East, while European countries could potentially provide a smaller additional package of interceptors.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed that European partners have already provided significant military assistance but said further deliveries of air defense missiles would be important for protecting Ukrainian lives.
