Investigators from Ukraine's Security Service have determined that russian-made Geran-2 drone damaged the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra on June 15 after analyzing debris recovered from the impact site

Ukraine's Security Service says it has confirmed that russian Geran-2 drone struck the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra during a mass overnight attack on the capital. Investigators reached the conclusion after examining drone fragments recovered at the impact site.

According to the Security Service, the attack took place at approximately 1:50 a.m. on June 15, 2026. The drone hit the Stefanivskyi chapel of the Assumption Cathedral within the historic monastery complex, one of Ukraine's most significant religious and cultural landmarks.

Investigators recovered parts of the drone's fuselage and engine, identifying it as the Geran-2 – russian-produced version of the Iranian Shahed loitering munition. The finding is consistent with russia's widespread use of Shahed-type drones in strikes against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.

The Security Servic also reported that some components of the drone were manufactured in russia's Alabuga Special Economic Zone. Markings found on the wreckage helped trace the origin of the parts, adding to evidence of domestic russian production rather than imported completed systems alone.

The strike caused visible damage to the cathedral complex, including roof structures, domes, walls, and windows. Nearby civilian buildings in Kyiv's Pechersk district were also damaged by the blast wave. Authorities said there were no deaths or injuries.

The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, holds deep religious and historical importance for Ukraine and the broader Orthodox Christian world. Damage to the complex is likely to draw international attention, not only because of the cultural loss but also because it was hit during a broader aerial assault on the capital.

Ukrainian authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the strike under Article 438 of the Criminal Code, which covers violations of the laws and customs of war. The Security Servic said investigators are taking steps to establish all circumstances of the attack and identify those responsible.
