russian air defense assets worth up to $90M were wiped out in August

Ukrainian drone operators from the Nemesis 412th Regiment have dealt a heavy blow to russian air defense systems, destroying multiple high-value targets last month. The success was reported on Wednesday, September 17, by the Unmanned Systems Forces via their official Telegram channel.

According to the statement, the Nemesis operators managed to eliminate three russian air defense systems worth an estimated $80-90 million. The targets included two Tor-M2 surface-to-air missile systems, one Buk-M3 launcher, and one radar unit from the Buk-M2 system.

The destruction of these systems represents not only a financial setback for russia, but also a significant reduction in its ability to shield frontline units from Ukrainian drone and missile strikes. Modern short- and medium-range air defense systems like the Tor and Buk are designed to provide layered protection against precisely the kind of drone attacks that Ukraine has mastered.

Interestingly, Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces also highlighted the use of innovative solutions in these strikes. While details remain undisclosed, the statement mentioned that video footage of the destruction is not being released at this time, likely to preserve operational security and prevent russia from analyzing Ukrainian methods.

The choice not to publish strike footage suggests that Ukraine may be employing new drone platforms, modified munitions, or advanced targeting techniques that remain classified. Such innovations are crucial in maintaining a technological edge over russian defenses, which continue to evolve in response to Ukraine's drone threat.

The report emphasizes that russian forces are attempting to adapt their tactics to counter Ukrainian drone warfare, trying to disperse and conceal their valuable air defense assets. However, as the Nemesis Regiment noted, these efforts have proven ineffective.

"The enemy is changing tactics, trying to stop us, to hide, but in vain – our retribution catches up with its target," the message read.

As Defense Express previously reported, Ukrainian forces have reported another successful series of operations against russian aerial reconnaissance. The Nexus special unit of the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, which specializes in neutralizing enemy drones, has destroyed a large number of russian UAVs in Sumy region.

According to released footage, the unit managed to take down dozens of hostile drones in the frontline skies over the past two weeks. The list of destroyed targets includes russian-operated Mavic, Autel, and Molniya drones.
