Several European countries are showing interest in the FZ275 LGR 70 mm rocket and new launchers, with Spain and Italy adopting the system for the Tiger and AW249 helicopters

Belgium's Thales division reports that an increasing number of European countries are showing interest in its FZ275 LGR 70 mm guided rocket and the corresponding launch systems. Nations such as Spain and Italy have already selected the new FZ606 six-tube launcher for their Tiger and AW249 attack helicopters. The launcher is also being considered for integration with Airbus’s H145M multi-role helicopter, recently chosen by Germany in 2024.

These rockets are also actively used in Ukraine, where they serve both air defense and strike roles. Ukrainian forces have integrated the FZ275 systems onto its Mi-8 helicopters (about ten units reportedly equipped) and Mi-24 gunships, which have received the M261 launchers from the American company Arnold Defense. This adaptation allows Soviet-era aircraft to employ modern precision-guided munitions effectively against both aerial and ground targets.

Thales Belgium has developed a wide range of launchers for different operational needs, accommodating two, six, seven, or even nineteen rockets. However, the company has also designed lighter versions holding one to five rockets, depending on the platform and customer requirements. According to Forces Operations Blog, these lighter variants were likely inspired by Ukrainian field experience, where flexible and mobile launcher setups have proven highly effective.

For the Ukrainian forces, Thales has reportedly helped create solutions for pickup trucks such as Toyota Hilux and Land Cruiser, as well as the Polaris all-terrain vehicles. These compact platforms can carry light launchers and serve as mobile rocket systems for quick strikes or drone defense. Such innovations are helping bridge the gap between traditional aircraft-mounted systems and modern land-based precision fire units.

Moreover, Thales Belgium is exploring options to equip unmanned aerial vehicles and ground robotic systems with its lightweight rocket launchers. Ukraine, with its vast array of both UAVs and ground robots, provides an ideal testing ground for these integrations. Real combat feedback from Ukrainian forces could significantly accelerate product development for future NATO and EU operators.

This cooperation highlights how Ukraine's battlefield ingenuity has influenced European defense manufacturers. Thales' flexibility and readiness to adapt its launchers for unconventional platforms reflect lessons learned from Ukraine's evolving drone and mobile warfare tactics.
