According to Ukrainian intelligence, the explosion occurred while the aircraft was undergoing engine start procedures at the military airfield in Akhtubinsk.
The Su-57 aircraft is equipped with AL-41F1 turbofan engines, also known as Product 117. These engines are used in the aircraft’s current configuration.
The agency noted that one possible cause of explosions or catastrophic engine failures in engines of this type is the use of low-quality fuel.
Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence did not provide further details about the extent of the damage to the aircraft or whether it can be repaired.
Su-57 aircraft is a key component of russia’s effort to develop and deploy fifth-generation combat aircraft. Its estimated price of $150 million makes the reported incident a potentially costly loss for the russian military.
